at last

(長い間待って， いろいろ努力して望ましいことが)ついに， とうとう， やっと(のことで)

At last， he came. ついに彼はやってきた《◆(1) 上の内包的意味から^×At last I got sick. → Finally I got sick. とうとう病気になった. (2) 否定文には用いられない： After all ［^×At last］ he did not come. 》

At last he became famous. ついに彼は有名になった.

at length

《正式》［文頭で］(長い間かかって)ついに， ようやく.

*finally

〖副〗［通例文頭， 動詞の前で］ (長く待ったあげく)ついに， やっと， ようやく《◆ at last の方が強意的. 感嘆文では不可》

The police finally got her. 警察はついに彼女を逮捕した

The enemy finally gave in. 敵はついに降参した.

*eventually

〖副〗結局は， ついに《◆否定文には用いない》

I eventually found a house that suited me. ついに自分に適する家を見つけた.

**until

〖接〗［主に肯定文で；継続を表す動詞と共にその継続の終了時を示して］［until の前にコンマを置いて；前から訳して］ (…して)ついに

She ran and ran， until she came to a small village. 彼女はどんどん走り， ついに小さな村にたどりついた《◆この用法では till より until が好まれる. また「ついに」を強調するため， until at last とすることも多い》.

▲He ended as a drunken man. 彼はついに飲んだくれになってしまった.

〔肯定文で〕 at (long) last; at length; finally; in the end; in the long run; in time; ultimately; 〔否定文で〕 after all. [＝とうとう¹]

●ついに夢のかなう日が来た. At long last the day her dream came true arrived. | At long last the day came when her dream came true.

・ついに長年の努力が実った. Finally the long years of effort achieved fruition.

・ついに革命が起きた. Eventually a revolution occurred.

・ついに株価が 1 万円の大台を割った. Stock prices have finally dropped below the benchmark level of \10,000.

・彼はついには一切を疑うようになった. He ended (up) by doubting everything.

・彼女はついに神経衰弱になってしまった. She wound up with a nervous breakdown.

・ついには彼の努力も認められるであろう. His efforts will be appreciated in time.

・その作品はついに完成しなかった. In the end, the work was left uncompleted. | The work was left uncompleted after all.

・病床の彼はついに再起できなかった. He was never to rise from his sickbed.
